VIABILITY
The future of Canadian agriculture depends on a productive, viable and profitable sector. CAPI has laid a foundation to address these issues in part through its studies on farm incomes and regulatory reform. CAPI has also explored this issue from the viability of rural economies in general.

CAPI Farm Income Project Forum

June 13-14, 2005

The Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) undertook a major study of the factors affecting current and future farm income prospects in Canada. Twenty individual studies regarding various aspects of farm income and factors affecting it were commissioned to experts in their respective fields. These researchers were asked to analyze specific factors and their trends as well as the manner in which they affect farm income in Canada. Preliminary findings from these studies were presented to a group of agri-food industry stakeholders at the CAPI Forum held on June 13th and 14th in Toronto. The purpose of the Forum was to present their findings to date with a view to soliciting responses from and facilitating discussion among the assembled stakeholders.

Objectives and Expectations

The specific objectives of the CAPI Forum were as follows:

  • To share preliminary findings from selected papers commissioned by CAPI as part of the farm income project with a diverse group of stakeholders representing the Canadian agri-food industry;
  • To solicit responses from those stakeholders including additional information for consideration as part of the project;
  • To facilitate dialogue among stakeholders with a view to increasing a collective understanding of farm income, factors affecting it and prospects for the future; and,
  • To provide CAPI with an appreciation for the various perspectives on farm income related issues as represented by the various stakeholders, and to inform the development of its own "third party perspectives."
All invitees to the Forum contributed to the discussion of these studies and other aspects of the current and future prospects for farm income in Canada. Some had direct interests in one part or another of the agri-food system while others provided a broader perspective. In general, the Forum enabled all participants to learn from one another and to increase their understanding of the issues related to farm income in Canada and prospects for the future and, from that, identify potential actions that may be taken to enhance those prospects.
